0:00 i guess just whenever i go online it's like usually once every because i'm online a lot once every 30 minutes i find at least someone going this is my opinion but it's a fact and i just sit there going no it is an opinion who are you and where are you going what do you want

0:35 together we'll find the ideal path on the way to wow show with your host kevin bemel my daughter and i have done a couple of shows together so this this time on the way to wow show now that she's in her teen years she's really starting to take a deeper look at her values and so we're going to do a segment in the identity realm of the spiritual pillar where my daughter is going to talk about some issues of what she thinks is important and and how she's been developing those ideas we're going to talk about those together

1:11 but first our bartender bryn smith is going to make a cocktail yes i am today i'm going to make a delicious cocktail called the presbyterian but i'm going to give it a little bit riff on summer vibes here so it's a really delicious cocktail that there really isn't much history about it all that we know that it was a pre-prohibition cocktail and in my mind it's called the presbyterian so maybe somebody wanted it after a church service or something so we're gonna go into that so let's get our shaker tin out this is gonna be a really yummy fresh summery cocktail so we're gonna put in one of my favorite

1:47 ingredients to muddle is basil so we're gonna put two little sticks of basil in there our two little leaves excuse me a basil we're going to put in two to three slices of nectarine peach works just as well and then we're going to muddle that and when you muddle you just want to make sure you stamp down the fruit you don't want to overly twist and get all the stuff really bruise the herbs just a little so that you can release the delicious aromas and the beautiful stuff we have here and then we're going to do some lemon so a half ounce of that

2:25 it's a big guy okay there we go pour that in your tin and just a half ounce of simple syrup to make sure we balance the cocktail with that lemon and then one and a half ounces instead of the normal two because we're going to try to have this be an afternoon drink here there we go and then we're going to add ice to our glass we're going to use like a commons glass because this is kind of a take off of a high ball as well

3:03 make sure you fill your glass tall with ice like so and then we're going to add some to our tin i always like to add a good amount of ice so that you make sure that you are diluting your cocktail but also making it gold and not watering it down alrighty let's give a good five second shake because we are going to put this cocktail on nice so we don't want to over dilute it and our last step here

3:39 would be some ginger beer ginger ale can work well but i just wanted that little bit of spicier note and about two ounces depending on how big your glasses you might have to put a little bit more and then we are going to strain this cocktail out into this glass here like so and i'm going to add a little nice piece of basil you want to slap it so you release the aromas and if you have a little extra piece of nectarine put that at the top

4:15 cheers there you go and now kevin come on over yeah you got to try this drink it's so delicious and refreshing you smell that basil yeah you do who doesn't want that on a hot summer day oh yeah zingy refreshing and yeah the the ginger beer kind of hits you at the end with a little bit of a punch it's great i love it thanks so much cheers thank you [Music] so here we are again right mm-hmm right you get are you you're embarrassed okay

4:50 i'm immediately camera shy yeah that's fine i'll get used to it okay i just smacked the microphone with my hair oh okay you look in the camera right there there you go look at uncle rick thank you hi so you know i mentioned in the intro that you're a teenager now um you're you're 14. i think i have been a teenager ever since you started this show yeah and you're starting to you know figure out your values in a more complex way right yeah yeah so

5:26 um in talking about our subject for for this uh segment you said you wanted to address this at least one thing you wanted to address was this issue of fact versus opinion and and and how people seem to conflate the two and the difficulties that causes right so you wanna you wanna talk about that and we'll see where the conversation goes okay sure uh i don't know where to begin um so why don't you [Music]

6:02 talk about that issue why it's important to you and why am i why is it important why is the issue of fact versus opinion why is that important to you how does that impact the relationships you have that sort of thing okay i guess just whenever i go online it's like usually once every because i'm online a lot once every 30 minutes i find

6:37 at least someone going this is my opinion but it's a fact and i just sit there going no it is an opinion it's like for instance a fact would be that normal milk is white unless you're colorblind to white i don't know i don't know how that works i'm not colorblind so i wouldn't know and then an opinion would be that milk is creamy because not everyone thinks milk is creamy but if you took that into

7:13 a bigger sense i guess it would be using an example of a series that i like a lot there is a series that most children my age know of called the dream smp one of the most prominent characters on that show is named dream the famous uh minecraft speedrunner or something i can't remember a lot of his fans seem to think this is hyperbole that he is god but not really because he's not

7:48 god because he's a mortal being but whenever somebody like fights against well not fights against but whenever they disagree with the guy they all just kind of go no it's like how dare you disobey the mortal being that is actually god i don't i don't dislike dream he's a very fine person uh just using his fan he recognizes the fact that his fans are bit yeah so dream is a real person yes he's a youtuber like me oh he's a youtuber and so but people have raised him to the sort

8:24 of god-like level so whatever he says they follow it no matter what huh basically there are two sides to this whole thing which kind of tie into the whole opinions versus facts an opinion would be because no one actually knows or at least well my opinion would be anyway because i don't know it might have been clarified but i have no idea because i don't watch those videos dream as i said before is a minecraft speedrunner which means he tries to complete the game

9:00 minecraft as fast as possible there is a notorious amount of cheating during those speed runs and a lot of people have accused him of cheating he himself has debunked those accusations but people still hold the opinion that he is still a cheater i do not hold that opinion and even if i did he's a funny guy so i don't know i don't care so the fact that are there some people are that are saying it's a fact that he's cheating

9:36 yes even though it's never been proven or disproven okay that's not so so they so they're saying it's a fact but they don't have any evidence okay and and and you find that to be a problem why is that why is that a problem i find it to be a felony i'm just kidding i don't i do i was about to say i don't know i guess it's just okay when you're on the internet as much as i am you are surrounded by people of all ages

10:11 and people of all personalities and attitudes and a lot of those people are children about the same age as i am that are less mature because it can range from six six that's not a word six in age six years in age to i don't know 50 probably more i don't know i don't know how this algorithm stuff works can range from six years old to 50 or more and you'll still have people arguing bickering like pigeons or i don't know

10:46 baby elephants you know whacking each other with their what are they called trunks the trunks it's just you see people bickering all the time in commons it's like this person leaves a comment about how i don't know they thought that um this guy's voice sounds like another guy that has nothing to do with him and then you see all these people that are agreeing with this guy and then you see this one person that's like uh actually i agree but this is not the place to say that and they all just kind of go

11:21 and that's annoying huh yeah i don't know why i do those bits i think it's funny so what do you think what do you think should be happening i think i mean we do not live in an ideal world if we did uh we would not exist we would all be up because everything would not exist i'll be up up in heaven oh okay we are jewish and in our belief angels are the perfect amalgamation an algorithm that's not the right word but whatever angels are the perfect being that never do anything wrong and i was

11:57 comparing a perfect world to that it is i see and i forgot what i was talking about oh no so um how should how should people be behaving we don't you're right we don't live in a perfect world right but um the the behavior that you're seeing on the internet where people are either making accusations without a basis for those accusations or they're trying to pass off opinions as

12:32 facts or you know they're they're just sort of bickering about meaningless things instead of those things what should people be striving to do do you think i don't want to sound like all those teachers you have in middle school that are like if you treat them with kindness they will treat you with kindness i hate i dislike those people highly because i had them and i could not get away from them no but okay

13:08 let's say someone says charizard a creature from a game called pokemon one of the charizard is the original one of the original pokemon from that game let's say someone says on a pokemon video charizard is the best pokemon and then i mean if you did not hold that opinion you have the choice to either go charizard is garbage charizard is garbage squirtle is the best pokemon ever and anyone who doesn't

13:44 think so can jump off tartarus wait tartarus is not a mountain that doesn't work they can jump off a mountain anyway i can jump off mount cinemore because i think that's from pokemon there we go that works i don't know but that's what they probably shouldn't do right exactly so how should what should people do instead you should go i hold a different opinion uh fire is weak against many things and water is more effective against other things that fire is weak too aka i like squirtle better but that's just my opinion oh i always whacked the mic

14:20 again swacked i can't speak stefano let us know if we've made any mic calves okay [Laughter] it's cooler down there so so people should be should be polite yeah i know it's hard to be polite when okay here's another example of something because i like those let's say that you've had i don't know a bad day at school or work and you want to watch dobbs who is a

14:56 pokemon youtuber you want to watch dobbs so you watch one of his top 10 best pokemon or favorite pokemon videos or something and you scroll down in the comments and you see someone go i don't know i like this thing that you don't like and you've had a bad day so you're automatically like you know okay let's say i am a bottle i'm not very high high i'm not very tall but uh i'm tall because i said so let's say i'm a bottle filled with i don't know lava and the lava is right here and then my the top of my head is the

15:32 top of the bottle and then seeing that just kind of makes it go you know i'm sorry i'm not following you why no so let's say okay instead let's say that the person who is having a bad day and sees this comment is a volcano you know how volcanoes slowly like you know they build up oh oh they they build up and then all of a sudden they erupt and explode yeah exactly so instead of you know just leaving they go on to the comment and you know they say something rude

16:08 and then that triggers another person to say something rude to them and then you have people like me who get there a year late because they aren't subscribed to dobbs and you like see this comment that says that and you want to leave your opinion and then when you click on the replies button it's just a bunch of people arguing over things so so it sounds to me like you're saying and instead of getting into petty arguments people should should just um either sort of let it go and not get involved or or if they are going to respond respond in a in an appropriate respectful way

16:44 yeah basically i know it's very difficult but it is right so it's not my problem i think it's all of our problems though don't you don't you think i mean i was referring to the fact that i am not another person oh okay yeah so um have you ever left a snarky comment i mean i used to before before i got a youtube channel because now i have to be aware of what i say for reasons i cannot discuss

17:19 fun right um i used to when i didn't have anything to worry about but that was also because i was a little immature brat it was uh you know not a fun person right so now that you have something at stake longer term you realize that that doing that is probably a bad idea yeah exactly the anonymity of the internet usually causes people to use it as an outlet because there is there are usually aren't any consequences on the internet

17:54 i know as people they say you're never above consequences but i mean let's say you leave a rude comment on someone's video or some other comment it's like the worst you're going to get is a reprimanding from that person and probably other people i mean they use the internet as an outlet but you wouldn't like attack your friends for liking a different pokemon or a different minecraft speedrunner because i mean there's consequences to that but probably get mad at you and not be your friend anymore right but you're not going to get kicked out of school

18:29 you're not going to lose a job for the most part i mean for the most part right yeah so so why if if they're if they're really for the most for most people on the internet if there's no consequences why should why do you think they should act um with respect and restraint um when they uh consider leaving comments or interacting with other people on the internet why should they bother if there's no consequences there are consequences that affect other people um

19:04 usually the people whom the comment is addressed to i mean in the worst case scenario you have someone who is using youtube as a destruction from their life and then someone leaving a comment that's rude to them is a reminder of their life and they just you know so it's kind of the the last straw you're saying so so you're saying that um [Music] tell me if this sounds right there can be um unintended consequences of

19:41 treating people rudely or or inappropriately on the internet that you that we might someone might not even think about especially if someone is really struggling in life and um and they you know they're they're they're looking to get away from their troubles and and they find them kind of in spades so to speak and that becomes the last straw yeah so how do we keep

20:16 how do you think we can keep um other people's uh needs or best interests in mind especially if they're you know people on the internet and for the most part strangers to us right it's not like you and me were you know daughter and father so you know presumably because we have that connection we want to treat each other respectfully and appropriately and all that right but for strangers on the internet how can we keep in mind that these other people we might be interacting with they're they're actual

20:52 people with maybe troubles like our own or more difficult than our own how do we do that do you think i mean i have a hard time remembering it myself so i don't really know well maybe it's it's something worth pondering huh sure right um you've heard of uh the famous rabbi hillel yeah so um what rabbi hillel said was what is hateful to you do not do to someone else

21:28 and then about a hundred years later i think jesus switched it around and he said do unto others as you would have them do unto you right and if you if you were to look across um religions throughout the world you would find um that virtually every religion has some version of of what christianity calls the golden rule and it's to me that's

22:03 that's what i try and do i try and keep that that that in mind i don't want to do something to someone else that i wouldn't want done to me to use hillel's version right um because i think if i do that then it justifies someone doing it back to me and then i've i've end up hurting another person and i end up hurting myself as well right so it becomes it becomes kind of a cycle a vicious cycle right they hit me oh and then back again they hit me again and back and then on and on and on and on and on right so

22:38 that's why we're in our family i think we try and make sure that we apologize as quickly as possible if we hurt somebody's feelings right to sort of cut that off we don't want that happening right yeah any other thoughts before we close out no okay well good well thanks thanks for sharing your thoughts i appreciate it i always love these discussions yeah okay so i have a knot in my thumb you have a knot in your throat oh okay do you want to have some uh this no i don't think it's possible to drink

23:14 leaves [Laughter] well yeah that's that's probably true all right well we'll we'll get you some water after the interview's over okay okay great thanks sweetie you're welcome for me i always love doing the episodes with my daughter and and this one is as she's crafting her identity in that spiritual pillar it's so fascinating to hear her developing her values figuring it all out in in a way she's just part of a

23:49 continuum that's been going on for millennia when you think about it what do we come down to we should all be living by the golden rule whether it's on the internet or in real life it's an easy lesson to remember but it's a very difficult lesson to follow i think nonetheless i think we should all give it a give it a try courage at all times my friends marie you're still my bell [Music]

24:51 [Music] you
