[0:01] okay all right we are live and okay this over go ahead and record so siri says we are recording and so that means we're live and welcome to the way to wow show this is wednesday february 9th and uh i'm your host kevin bemel [0:36] and actually my friend uh steve is here in the meeting and uh so just uh you know i usually start out the show by recapping uh the previous week so last week i was talking about strategy and tactics for marketing yourself whether it's uh to find that that job that you'll love or whether it's to find clients for your customers for your business and um you know we i only got part way through it and i thought you know rather than just sort of cutting it off there i continue with that this week and we'll we'll so we're gonna [1:11] wrap up talking about some of the strategies and tactics you can use for marketing whereas we talked about linkedin uh last week um i'm going to talk about uh developing a resume this week but not really from the standpoint of resume writing because there's lots of great resume writers out there who can you know format it and all that kind of stuff but really thinking about your resume from a marketing strategy and tactics standpoint to understand what it is or how you can use [1:46] what your talents are what your skills are your knowledge your experience in order to advance yourself professionally oh here's somebody else coming in let's see so before before we get into um today's topic though um i wanted to let you know what's happening with the way to wow starting on march 3rd my friend and colleague leia siegel will be launching her weekly [2:21] show it's called the way to wow um securing your financial foundation and leia is going to be talking about and having guests discussing financial security and wealth building so she's going to be talking about another aspect of the finance realm and the physical pillar of the three pillars of attainment uh her show will be at one o'clock pacific time three o'clock eastern time on thursdays okay and so i i invite you to to tune in to to leia i think you will find her both [2:57] very engaging as well as knowledgeable and and and just a very intelligent woman on these topics she has a great great passion for helping people achieve their financial goals and and she's got some great guests lined up um i i i know who her her premier guest is um it's uh actually a friend of mine by the name of jeff condon uh one of the uh if if not the premier estate planning lawyer in the country he's written the most uh read book on estate planning for [3:32] just the average person like you and me and i had jeff was a guest on season two of my show um incredibly knowledgeable and again someone who's very dedicated to helping people um make sure that they're making good financial decisions so um again that that's that's launching on march 3rd [Music] i'm gonna i'm gonna mute rena there that's launching on march 3rd uh 11 uh i'm sorry 1 p.m pacific time 3 p.m no that wouldn't be right 1 p.m pacific [4:07] time 4 p.m eastern time on thursday march 3rd so look forward to that what what we're what we're doing here at the way to wow show is we are building what i call a podcasting mutual network and so over the coming year i'm going to be developing additional shows based on you you can see it right there the the three pillars of attainment physic uh physical physical uh mental and spiritual right and then the nine realms within them i'm going to be [4:43] developing with other hosts shows on topics within those nine realms and we're all going to be broadcasting to each other's social media followers and uh we'll all be broadcasting on the uh way to wow youtube channel as well and the idea is to bring to you all the information that you need in order to advance your life according to your definition of success so we're not going to tell you what a successful life is it's not for us to do [5:18] that what we're going to do is help you figure that out for yourself in many ways um i'm going through this process now with with my daughter who's who's 14 and a half and i you know i've been telling her now for over a year the time for me to tell you what to do is ending very very quickly the time for me to be a resource for you an advisor for you is at hand because it's really for her to figure out what she wants her life to be she's on the cusp of adulthood now [5:53] and the best thing i can do for her is to give her the skills the information and the confidence that she needs to lead her life true to herself and and that's what we're going to be doing on all the extensions of the way to wow um with with the various hosts that come on and so if you are someone who has expertise in a particular area of life could be relationships it could be mindset it could be um uh [6:28] dealing with family it could be health um any of the nine realms uh get in touch with me maybe we can develop a show together for you to become part of our mutual network so if you go to the waywowshow.com you can contact me there and we can have a conversation who knows where it will lead um so again if i'm looking for people who can who are committed to doing a weekly show to help other people out better understand their area of of [7:04] expertise be able to share things with them bring guests to the table who can bring ideas new thinking um to to the particular topic at hand so that together we can all build our lives up and and and help each other live more uh live happier more satisfying lives all right and so so that that's that's what the long-term goal is all right so um now for our topic at hand which is marketing yourself and hold on one sec uh let's see i'm gonna make sure i've got [7:40] this set here yeah you don't need that hide okay so i'm going to go ahead and share my screen so you can see the slides here we go and okay all right so um for those of you who are on last week you i'm sure you remember this slide and i'm just going to review a couple things real quickly to get us into the the the focus of of marketing ourselves so i mentioned last week the first thing we [8:16] have to do oftentimes is make a mindset shift and that is to understand that wealth comes from value delivered right so the more people we can help and the better we can help them the better is our opportunity to create wealth for ourselves and our families our loved ones whatever you know whatever context we're working that in and that's a different mindset than just trying to sell a lot of stuff or just work a lot of hours those those can help you make money but [8:51] in many cases they're not sustainable models especially in the face of how rapidly business and life is changing these days i mean who would have thought two years ago that remote work would be the way that so many people probably will conduct their careers from now on we've talked about it for years and years and years and years and years and yet and yet over almost almost overnight rarely does change happen so fast it's it's become a very important aspect of our professional lives right so understanding that and being able to [9:26] deliver wealth i'm sorry deliver value in that context will be able to be more effective in developing wealth for ourselves and those people who are important for us so again wealth comes from value delivered so our key thing is how can i deliver ever more value to the people that i'm serving that's the mindset we want to come to our marketing effort with and in that way we don't have to be all involved with oh i'm so great i'm the best at this i'm the best at that [10:01] um my friend steve is on the show i mentioned we have a mutual friend by the name of bill bill markets himself as the real estate probate expert that's where his value is right in in being able to help people better than anyone else when it comes to dealing with real estate uh the real estate of you know relatives or or loved ones or whatever who who have passed away that's where he delivers value and he seeks every day to be able to do that better and better [10:36] and better okay so that's the mindset we want to have wealth comes from value delivered okay and then we again i mentioned last week about the five steps so these are the only five steps you need to take to get a high paying job or to develop a lucrative business and we're right here in uh step number three i'm sorry we're right here in step number four market yourself okay so um i'm not gonna go through the other three steps i did that um last week and and i encourage you to if you didn't see last week's show go to our youtube channel and and and look that up it's [11:12] it's uh you know archived under um live episodes and you can stream that and we'll it will talk about um first of all it'll talk about how you develop a unique value proposition based on your skills which is your your knowledge skills and experience what you're interested in what you like to do love to do have a passion to do and then market demand that's that's critical that you understand your unique value proposition before you start marketing yourself because this is notice this word here it is again value your unique value proposition is how are you uniquely going to deliver value to the people who [11:50] can benefit from what you are able to do right that's your unique value proposition okay and then um we also talked about um a little bit about uh doing uh a skills assessment and um you know figuring out your interests this is all by way of of determining um what your uvp is okay and then so then we got to marketing yourself okay and i talked about um google yourself first before you think about putting all the good stuff about you you want to know is [12:25] there any bad stuff about me out there or what is out there about me right and especially if there's negative information about you out there you you want to do some uh you know if nothing if nothing else damage control um and and and take care of that and and by the way the negative stuff could have come from our from ourselves we put some photos out there of you know that wild weekend in cancun or something that maybe don't uh reflect us in the best light or it could come from somebody else who you know has uh you know not a legitimate crutch against us or or you know some had some kind of [13:00] interaction they didn't like and they decided to you know disclose it on on social media so we need to know about those things and deal with them okay and then we we also talked about developing your linkedin profile and how you can use linkedin for uh networking and in fact just before the show i was talking to someone who was a new friend of mine robin and she was talking to me about how she has used linkedin to really help build a new business that she started um and i noticed in i think it was the wall street journal this morning that uh linkedin is is being [13:36] touted as the best social media platform and i think there's there's a lot of uh merit to that because you know most people stay very professional on linkedin so we're not getting a lot of sort of egregious uh um you know political talk or this or that and you know people are are conscious that how they present themselves on linkedin can directly impact their economic well-being and so uh i i see a lot more collaboration and a lot more sort of moderation on linkedin and and i think that's a good thing and it makes it easier for us to network within that [14:12] environment uh than perhaps you know some other um social media platform okay so um i want to just review real quickly um link what i talked about in linkedin profile so your linkedin profile is a story of why someone should hire you either as an employee or as a business owner that's what your linkedin profile is about okay and it's actually set up to help you do that the way it's laid out and linkedin [14:47] gets better and better about this as time goes by um so you can write a headline you can put in a summary you can put in video clips and articles all of those help it's helped you explain to your target market why you're the best person for them to work with okay and and again when you think about your unique value proposition that's really what this you're telling the story of your unique value proposition here's why i'm valuable to you here's how i can [15:22] help you here's how i can benefit you and you're and you're doing that in this story format it's almost like when i say story i mean more like a newspaper story than you know a a a book story right because you start out with strong headline you go into a summary and then from there you get into the details right so that's what a linkedin profile affords you to do and you're you can do somewhat something somewhat similar um with with your resume okay so um now let's get into the meat of what we're going to talk about today so [15:58] your resume is what's going to help you clarify your marketing message it's going to clarify how you convey your unique value propositions so i have an example here once upon a time xyz company needed a key problem solver to deal with an issue and help it move to the next level of success along came me in my case a veteran who crushed in the military and now can bring the same winning attitude and skill set to fill your need okay that's essentially a template that you can use [16:33] in order to put together a summary marketing message for yourself right let's look at the key components about it now you may not actually say once upon a time but xyz company who did who did you work for before that you benefited and what was the issue that they needed help with that you positively impacted okay and how did it help and how did your [17:08] ability to deal with that issue to however however it is was you dealt with it maybe it was a person maybe it was a personnel issue maybe they were having trouble retaining employees and along uk and you help them increase employee employee retention by 50 thereby lowering turnover costs by x percent or [17:44] x number of hundreds of thousands of dollars or however you quantify that and at the same time bring greater team cohesion to the people working there as they serve the company's clients okay and and so the second part of this along came me you know what are a couple key points in your background a you know honors harvard graduate um a [18:21] senior enlisted uh person in the military um a um newly minted mba who had who had uh cert who had uh completed a successful internship at such and such a company and this is what you brought maybe it was a winning attitude maybe it was experience in the exact in solving the exact issue that the company had the exact problem the company had and was able to do so [18:57] right all of that will come out of the prior work you did in developing your unique value proposition in uncovering your skills experience and now your knowledge skills and experience in uncovering what it is you have an interest a love a passion for doing those those are the elements that you'll plug into this message that is really what your resume is all about okay now [19:32] um when you're writing your resume what you want to do is focus on the organization's needs not your own the fact that you have a resume the organization knows you're looking for a job or if you're using it to gain clients you're looking for clients they're clear on that you don't have to you don't have to say that they know okay what they want to know is what's in it for me how are you going to help me now me maybe the company may maybe the customer the client okay so as you write [20:09] your resume that's the perspective you want to take okay the same is true we talked about last week in your linkedin profile how are you going to benefit the people that you're looking to serve okay so that's that's the key key key focus you cannot forget that okay and then just a little beware here we're about word usage so the word secure versus secure so secure in a military context means to make sure that it's locked up like to secure the mess hall means to [20:45] make sure the mess hall door is locked as opposed to secure which means safe okay they're related but they're not the same thing and so you know be mindful of who is going to be reading your resume as you develop the language so if you're going to be applying for jobs in the aerospace industry so you you may be dealing with a lot of former military and they will understand secure in a particular way as opposed to civilians who most civilians are not going to understand i i secured the mess hall they're going to meet you you made the mess hall safe what you put [21:21] down non-strip non-slip strips on the floor or what did you what does that mean you secured the mess hall right and by the way what's a mess hall is that a a hallway with a lot of junk in it right so we need to be careful about the words we use right server versus server server as in waiter waitress or server you know computer server right those are again they're related but they have two different meanings so if you're if you're in the tech world um and and you know your last job was working at um i don't know chili's right and you were a server you know [21:56] at first it's gonna look strange to someone in the tech world because server to them means a computer basically so so be mindful of your word usage and and who's going to be reading your resume to be as clear as possible in your communication okay so let's let's look at a resume itself okay here's you know and by the way resume page one in fact if at all possible make your resume one page now most ceos of even the largest [22:31] companies have a one-page resume if they can do it with all of their accomplishments we can too certainly never more than two pages okay three-page resume you might as well not apply for the job okay it's just it's it's just it's too long anymore and what what it's what you're what you're saying to um a hiring manager is you just don't know how to get to the point okay so one page is is ideal [23:07] if it's absolutely necessary two pages but that's it okay so part one of your resume is an advertisement of your abilities qualities and accomplishments from the lens of how can you help the company to whom or the clients to whom you're submitting the resume okay and you're gonna you're gonna rewrite your resume for each and every person or or entity that you submit it to the days of having one resume for everybody are gone they've been gone for [23:42] years and years and years so you're going to customize it each time which speaks i mentioned earlier there are resume writers out there professional resume writers out there and they can be very helpful um some are very very good others are are awful i you know i encourage you to ask around to friends or call work colleagues and to see if they've used somebody that they would recommend but just know that even if you have your resume done by a professional resume writer that doesn't mean you're now done what it means is you now have essentially a template that you're going to have to [24:18] um uh what's the word i'm looking for uh that you're gonna have to make specific for each each company or each particular person you're submitting it to okay now by the way if you're meeting with several people in the same company you're not going to want to change it for each of those people you're not going to want to tailor it that much but for each company or each client that you're submitting a resume to it needs to be tailored for that company that client okay so again part number one advertisement of your abilities qualities and accomplishments so you'll put in personal information i'm [24:54] going to show you a sample resume by the way or not example i'm going to show you my resume um in a little while um so you'll you'll see this in in more directly um you may put in a headline and a summary statement and a section of core strengths and capabilities now you'll see i haven't done that in my resume um and and i'll explain to you why when we talk about it but a lot of resumes these days will have those sections in it okay and and in terms of telling your story of why the a company should hire you why a client should hire you what how you can benefit them these are very [25:30] very effective techniques and by the way if you've taken the time to do a really great linkedin profile you probably have already done these steps okay because you can see on linkedin you you write a headline you put in a summary and then you have your core strengths and capabilities that people can click on and recommend you for them it's it's all basically just the same thing so you all you do is just format it for your resume okay and if you haven't done that on linkedin then and then you know write your resume with those things and then transfer that information over to [26:05] linkedin okay so that's part number one part number two is going to be the evidence backing up your assertions about your abilities qualities and accomplishments so if you say that you know you're a stellar negotiator okay what evidence do you have that that's the case so through your experience education and if applicable ward awards or unusual achievements publications civic leadership or community leadership position somewhere in there [26:40] you should have something that demonstrates that that you indeed have that superior negotiating skill okay maybe cost control is another of your outstanding skills so presumably somewhere in your experience you did something that showed that you lowered costs for the company while maintaining or increasing productivity okay so when you put in your your experience your professional experience and your education [27:16] what you're looking to do is explain how those things benefited whoever it is you were using them for okay so you don't need to get into grandiose explanations of titles and and all that nobody especially these days nobody really cares about that stuff okay i mean unless you were a ceo or a president something like that and then and if so that's all you need to do is just put the title of the position there but beyond that focus on providing evidence to back up what you [27:52] said in part one through your experience your education again awards or unusual achievements publications civic and community leadership okay now there were many things that used to be included in a resume that you just leave out now and this should make it much easier for your resume to be only one page long and that is references available upon request everybody knows if they ask you for references you'll give them references and if you don't then evidently you don't want to work there right so you don't have to say they're available if they want them they'll ask you okay [28:27] available for interview again you don't need to put that in your resume it's assumed that you're available for an interview and if you're not you're not gonna move on okay hobbies are personal interests honestly people just they just they just don't care now by the way it's not that they won't have any impact on your ability to get clients or or get that job you want they can be very very important but not in your resume okay so so be clear about your interests because one of the things you want to do [29:02] when you walk into a room to meet with someone about becoming a client or about getting a job is to quickly look around the space and see if there's anything there that indicates their interest in something that you house will have an interest in because then you can use that to connect with them right so if you're really into fishing for example and you walk into somebody's office for a meeting and that person has got pictures of them you know in hip waiters in some river with their you know fly rod bang there you go oh hey i see are you you're a fly fisherman uh wow that where where was that picture taken and off the [29:38] off you are to the races talking about fishing you know maybe you'll spend the whole meeting talking about fishing and then at the end i'll go gosh you know fishermen like you we got to have you work here you know kind of thing i mean they sound silly but believe me um there were several clients i got when i was in business because i walked in their office and up on the wall they had their degree and it was from usc oh you went to usc in fact my my first big client that i got in my real estate company i walked into the person's office and he had his degree i said you went to usc he said yeah i did i said oh yeah i did too he says oh when were you there and so we we [30:14] talked for 30 minutes about ufc 15 minutes about what he wanted done and he hired me right so you know those things can make a big difference but they're not well obviously the college you went to you'll put on your resume but hobbies and those kind of things uh personal interests you're not going to put that on your resume okay salary information requirements again you don't put up that on your resume not not these days i'm not sure it was ever really appropriate frankly um and you know there's a a place and time uh for for dealing with salary uh but your resume is not it okay reasons for [30:50] leaving a job or the military now in general you are not going to discuss that okay the presumption is going to be you left one job to go to the next job now where that will change is if you have a big gap between leaving one job and starting another and a big gap might be you know a year or more okay so what went on in that period that there was a such a big gap there okay so if you're if you're a woman maybe you had a child [31:26] look that you know that's that's how happens so you know um just put a line in there you know the time period that you were out of work you know um starting a family that's all you have to say okay and it shows there's continuity there and there was a good reason why you were out of the workforce for that time okay um but other than that you don't you don't need to put in a resume why you left a particular job or why you left the military you may get asked that in a meeting but you know you'll again you'll deal with it in that context not on your resume okay you don't need to put prior [32:01] supervisors okay no reason to do that and you don't need to put you know the full addresses of previous employers you don't even need to put any kind of address for a previous employer um generally speaking it's not going to be relevant it just it's just going to take up space in your resume that that you know would be put to better use okay so we've got the two parts of the resume and the things to leave out and you can see that you're developing your marketing message all right so let's look at let's look at your experience how do you want to which is really in terms of [32:38] proving what you can do for a company it'll come through your the the you know two or maybe three prior experiences that you have you don't need to put every job you've had you know since college especially if you're you know already in your 40s or 50s and you've had you know seven jobs since college you don't need to put all of them okay you're you're better off just putting the last two or three those are the most hopefully the most relevant they're the ones where you were in the most senior positions [33:14] okay and assuming that you're continuing on in that career path that's really what a prospective client or customer needs to know a client or or employer needs to know all right if you're changing directions so then you may need to change which job experiences you put in your resume and that's kind of a special situation so um you know feel free if you want if if that's your situation and you're not sure how to deal with that so feel free to get in touch with me i'm i'm happy to [33:49] help you with that and uh you know we'll we'll we'll talk at that talk about that on the side um all right so in terms of your two or three prior experi job experiences or prior work experiences right so first of all your job title just whatever it was now if you're coming out of the military generally speaking you don't want to use military language okay so unless you were a general or an admiral where everybody knows those are the most senior uniformed people in the military you're going to want to translate [34:26] what what your title was from military language to civilian language okay and you can you if you go online and google military to civilian language you'll find websites dedicated to doing that okay and by the way you can put the civilians description and then in parentheses next if you want to you can put what your actual um job title was in the military just to be clear um and in that way you're kind of hitting both and and so if you are if you do happen to be talking to someone who has prior military experience [35:01] they'll appreciate that because they'll have you know they'll know what that means and and it'll be more descriptive for them okay next is what was the name of the organization and what was its size the city state and or country that it's located in that's all you need to put about the organization okay so if you were say you worked for you know ibm right multinational uh technology company and then wherever the office was of ibm that that you worked in whether it was you know here in the us or maybe it was [35:36] uh overseas somewhere that's all you need to put okay now obviously for a company like ibm a lot of people know that company so you know that's fine for a company that's less well known you know you you you are going to want to quantify it more carefully so if it was a middle market company or um a regional uh a regional technology support company um you know uh and then and then whatever the revenue range it's in uh 10 million to 30 [36:13] million annual revenue something like that okay that gives people an idea of the the level at which the company is at and therefore something about the level of responsibility you had within that company based on your job title okay and then you'll put three to five bullets at the most for each position okay three is the minimum five is absolutely the maximum okay and you might think four is the sweet spot but really three would be better um if you if you have to put in a fourth okay [36:48] um if you absolutely have to put in a fifth it better be five dynamite bullet points otherwise by putting additional bullets in you're just diluting your message okay so the first bullet should be the mandate and our objective for the position right so depending on what you did what was it what was in essence what was the issue what was the problem you were there to deal with so if you were in marketing your your mandate might have been to grow market annual market share by [37:25] 10 or whatever that was or um increase the customer base by 30 per year or whatever it was okay now maybe maybe maybe one of the reasons you left that job was because it was unclear what your mandate was and made it impossible to to work there and succeed so you're going to have to you may have to impute a little bit of information in that so that someone who's trying to assess or someone who's working to assess your background will understand what what it [38:02] is that you're working on accomplishing okay second bill second bullet should be the scope of of your role the size of your team or department in other words how many people reported to you or what was the size of the group that you worked in was it was it small did you work on your own obviously it's very different than if you were in charge of a group of 100 people right those are very very different positions so describe that and again you want to be as accurate as you can okay so your third and fourth and fifth bullets if you use them [38:37] should be these what benefit did you have to the organization and you want to quantify it okay not increased employee retention okay well that sounds fine but by how much reduced employee turnover by 32 over an 18-month period okay good that that's a you know that's that's a hard metric that that somebody can look at okay what was the impact you had similar to [39:12] the benefit of the organization so impact you had reposition company into an additional market of blah blah blah thereby increasing revenue potential by 25 or 26 or whatever it was or 50 okay did you get promoted so the job title that you have now or that you're reporting you know as as in your experience is that a position you were promoted to so you know promoted from [39:49] intern to assistant vice president over 26 months okay that's pretty uh you know pretty good uh career progression right okay um name of a well-known or high-ranking person that you worked with you know uh aid to camp well you wouldn't say adequate personal aid to general norman schwarzkopf or um executive assistant to the secretary of the navy okay people unders these are you know well-known uh people or [40:24] positions and the fact that you work with someone at that level gives you a certain cachet it's telling people that you're able to work with very with with top top people okay um you might also have a customer testimonial or if you were in the military a testimonial from your commanding officer or from someone else in your command maybe maybe it was the you know commanding general or admiral um you didn't report directly to that person but but they nonetheless um you know said something or wrote you a a commendation letter so you could use an [41:00] excerpt from that or again for someone who's in the military or even if you were in the civilian world and you got written evaluations so you can also look at those and pull out a short quote from them that that says something about what you how you benefited the organization what kind of impact you had okay so again notice that you're going to be doing all of this by way of conveying to the company to potential customers how what you did at this particular organization shows how that you can benefit them [41:37] you're not trying to show people what a great person you are or how you know what what a fast starter you are it doesn't really matter what matters is how you help the organization okay the only reason you would put your promotion in there is presumably that's that's the organization saying to you that you're doing a great job and so we're giving you more responsibility okay all right start each bullet with a strong verb [42:13] okay repositioned expanded reduced okay reduced cost expanded market share um refocused company efforts okay that is what will get people reading on remember that each statement you make in your resume has two purposes one is to con one is to convey information and the second is to intrigue the reader enough to get [42:48] them to read the next statement those are your two goals in terms of each statement in your resume okay strong verbs action words will help you uh accomplish that okay all right so let's see i think yeah so i'm gonna let's see all right um okay so hopefully now you're seeing my this is a resume i did um a couple of years ago um uh and that i made a couple of [43:24] modifications of earlier uh this earlier today just to give you an idea about how some of this stuff should look so you can see it's on one page okay now i didn't put in a headline in a summary and um a list of um core skills um but um if i did they would go you know right in here at the top so here's the personal information that i put in it's really just my name in this case i have you know a couple of master's degrees my address my telephone number my email my email address now these days you might not even put an [43:59] address in you might just put your phone number and email address because so much of of interaction between people is done by phone text message and email that may be all you need to do so um you know it just depends again on on on the context okay and then again if you were one of the i think one of the things if i redo my resume i'll do is i'll i'll put in a headline and a brief summary one or two sentences at the most and then a listing of key or core competencies core experience etc [44:34] okay so that would be part one and then part this is part two so the rest of my resume is part two and you can see that i in terms of experience i just have three things listed under experience okay my current company of which i'm the president and founder starting in 2018 the united states navy where i was a chaplain from 2006 to 2020 and then my prior professional experience which 20 years at my company bevel management company that's it i don't need to put anything before that even though i do have professional experience before that [45:11] it's it's it's not necessary and in fact it might not even be necessary now that it's you know five four years in my current company i might not even need to put this third experience here so if i was going to put in section you know a section with a headline etc i could probably pull out this part about what i did professionally prior to the navy okay now notice uh in in each case i've got um the name of the company my position the dates okay the basic things that i did okay and then just a short sentence um [45:47] in this case administration of financial affairs of individuals businesses real estate trusts and estates raising of equity for startups and real estate projects financial investment analysis and due diligence of business and real estate projects okay results um handle complex negotiations to minimize transactional costs and amount of time to achieve clients goals okay now i could make this better by actually giving giving like reduced transactional costs by 12 okay i you know i could go back and and and figure that out so the more uh quantified i could make this the [46:24] better it would be okay coordinate with accounting legal and other professionals keeping all property uh all properly advised and focused on clients goals okay not sure if i can put a um an actual quantifiable in there but but perhaps i could come up with something okay prepare packages for acquisition just vision financing business real estate projects right this this is something that i would i should replace because it's just too too general with uh some sort of metric that that shows what i've been able to do how much capital i've raised for example or [47:00] how many companies i successfully funded or something like that okay so that's that's what uh that's what would need to change here to improve this resume okay and then here for the united states navy i'm just going to go through one other one administration pastoral care and ethics and leadership training those are the main things that i did so um after 18 months appointed senior department head which usually requires 14 years of service right administrator unit including a staff including eight chapels a staff of 14 people and a budget of 1.5 million dollars [47:35] concurrently oversaw supply and procurement and contracting while also providing care to 300 sailors of the dental clinics 100 marines assigned to or in the prison okay it's actually the brig but of course don't want to use military terms so we use the word i use the word prison thereafter provided pastoral care to over 1300 sailors and marines at five locations in two states and during a seven month shipboard combat deployment to the persian gulf and arabian sea okay results initiated and implemented inventory and purchasing controls that resulted in a 10 [48:10] budget surplus now because it's the government you don't it's just the sort of the weird way the government works you don't save the government money once the money is allocated it's either used by your department or by some other department so in my case the fact that i didn't need 10 of our of the money budgeted to our department i was able to turn that back to the larger command who was then able to do other things like repair roads right instead of me wasting the money on things that that you know our our part [48:46] of the command didn't need okay reduce time to hire employees by 33 percent while complying with all policies so one of the things i was told when i got there was to hire a new civilian employee took six to eight months okay i got it done in four right and they told me it couldn't possibly happen but you know i figured out ways to do it which basically amounted to talking to people whose assistance i needed and figuring out how could i help them so it they didn't have to spend as [49:21] much time on it and and therefore they could pass it along more quickly because as you might imagine a lot of that six months it normally took was people taking time to get around to it so the fact that i was willing to do some of their work for them and all they had to do was just kind of read through it and check it off and move it along speeded the process up enormously okay um significantly improved morale by originating developing and leading implementation of emotional and spiritual resiliency programs with a team of four chaplains for over 4 000 sailors and marines during a ship or deployment okay so not not as quantified [49:56] as the other two but it speaks to the fact that i had you know that i did pastoral care and ethics and leadership training okay so that's that's how you want to write your bullet points uh for your resume so people can see a quantified way in which you benefited the organization okay i'm not going to go through the third one and then down here education just very straightforward masters in library information science san jose state university 2015 is when i got it masters in religious studies they store los angeles 2005 and then bachelor of science architecture degree from usc 1983 awarded laude presidential [50:32] scholar dean's list right so those were awarded with honors that's all you need to put about your educational experience um look maybe you were you know president of your graduating class okay so like i did here laude or whatever maybe you were um phi beta kappa or some other thing so whatever those are just to pin them on to the end but you you really don't want to go more than one line for each one of these um unless you have such stellar credentials to add to your educational qualifications that it's worth putting [51:07] two lines but it's certainly not worth going to a second page okay and that's why i kept mine short right and and this you know so what are you gonna do with this well first of all if you haven't developed your linkedin profile you can take the information from this resume and put it into your linkedin profile if you looked at my linkedin profile you'll see much of the same kind of verbiage used there okay the second thing is when you go to a meeting to talk about a job or to talk with a particular client depending on what your business is you're probably you're gonna need to bring a copy of your resume a hard copy [51:43] and and have it available to hand it to them so that it's something for them to to have once the meeting is done okay all right so so and again this is a sample resume if you have any questions about any of this go to the way to wow show website the way to wow show dot com send me a message or you can make a comment in social media on this show we have uh the way to wow show uh on um linkedin you can also go to my linkedin profile kevin demille you can go to facebook both there's a way to [52:18] wash a way to wow show page on facebook as well as myself same with twitter and uh instagram we we have both as well and uh we should actually be up on twitch uh sometime in the next few weeks for those of you who are you know into the gaming thing and your big twitchers is that what they're called i'm not really sure so uh oh and then so then i just want to show you this last slide the main thing in anything we talk about on the way to wow people making money is you take some kind of action [52:53] it's all good and well to talk about this but in the end if you don't take action a lot it's essentially been for naught so assess your skills identify your interest work on your linkedin profile reach out to other people on linkedin draft up your resume and then show it to people who know you or you know get in touch with me i'll i'll take a look at it be happy to give you some input okay maybe develop an elevator pitch i'm not going to get into elevator pitches and i'm not going to do it next week either it's a whole it's a whole nother thing um and uh there are people who can [53:30] talked about talk about that better than i can frankly okay but but do do do take action okay and here's some of the here's some of the ways you can um get in touch with me there's my twitter and linkedin profile on facebook it's actually facebook.com the way to wow okay it's no longer navy rabbi but it takes you the same page you can also send me an email coaching bevel.com and i'll be happy to answer any questions that you have um and uh also again if you um know someone you think would be a good guess for the show [54:05] let me know if you know someone who you think would be a good host for a brand extension to the way to wow show again please let me know if that's you or someone you know happy to talk to you about that okay and here again is you know the legal stuff right all of this is copy written to to my company so if you want to use any of this please just get in touch with me we can make an arrangement so that you know um my my copy written material can be made available for you um if you want to use it okay let's gonna stop the share and that's what i've got for you today [54:40] so i want to just reiterate a couple of points one is we don't make any professional advancement without taking some kind of action keeping in mind that sometimes when we take action it's going to be the wrong thing and it's not going to go right that's part of making progress sometimes progress is taken a couple of steps back so we can take a better step or two or three or four going forward whatever that is so the the you know the regression is is [55:15] just a natural part of the process to be afraid of failing so that you don't advance is the only way to actually fail failure that sets you back so you can go forward on a new path is not failure it's just it's a setback and we all face setbacks in life right the main thing is to not let them permanently take us out of the game that's the most important thing okay so find some kind of action you can take to get you on your [55:51] to to continue on your journey of professional advancement okay that's my show for today next week my guest is going to be jennifer chang so jennifer is the managing partner of techspark which is a company that supports business startups and entrepreneurial ventures and she is also the ceo of i can't remember the name of her organization hold on one second i'll i think that's true you know if you think about uh the wizard of oz right the scarecrow wanted i think it was a brain and the tin man wanted a heart and the lion wanted courage the other two already had courage they did just fine it was the lion who he was always seeming to cause more trouble than he was fixing until he realized [58:14] courage is in all of us courage is not being unif is not being unafraid courage is being afraid and saying i'm going to act anyway knowing things may not go exactly how i want them to go knowing that i may mess up and have to fix something better to do that than to stay where you're at if you're not happy in that place okay so that's why i say courage at all times my friends and marie darling [58:51] you are still my bell thank you so much for watching
